Broken and De Saturated Colours

A desaturated colours are created when you mix a pure colour with black or white. You can say that a colour is broken when it's kind of grey and this is achieved when you mix a pure colour with it's complimentary. You can see this de saturated and broken colours everywhere, movies, posters, paintings, animations etc.
When you want to show a more sad or boring picture you use de saturated colours so it will give you that mood. You use the broken colours so it will get that desaturated mood.
Some times there is a combination of desaturated colours and a hint of saturation so it will give you a focal point and a more strong picture.

No light - Qurien

No light is a 3D animation which won the 1Film 3d Animation Challenge 2011 by QAS. It's about a man dealing with power shortage in his house and work and how it affects his every day life and night.
They use of bright blue and red are the primary colours they used with the complementary colour which is purple. Everything else are tinted and shaded colours of this combinations.
In his office the colours that are used are mostly tints of blue and yellow. There is also the complementary which is orange. For instance the wall of his office is light blue and the chair he is sitting has a light orange colour.
When the night comes and the mosquitos are buzzing in his ears you can see a warm bluish, purplish colour which it tries to represent the night fall. It's time to relax but not for this poor guy.
I really enjoyed watching this animation it's kind of fun to watch but on the other hand you notice how depended we have become with the electronic and electrical machines..

Alarm - Short Animation

"Alarm" is a short animation created by an in depended animation team called MESAI.
It's a really well built animation with really bright colours. In the bedroom you can see a combination of primary and secondary colours. Also pure colours are used as well. The primary colours that are mostly used are red and blue. You can also see some tints and shades of these two colours and also the secondary colour that is created by this combination (purple).
In the kitchen you notice the use of yellow and blue with their secondary colour, which is green.
In the living room we go back to the combination of red and blue but we can see a small addition of the secondary colour of green in the picture.
In the elevator to work you can get the feeling of a sad place because of the use of dull colours, shades of purple, dark blue and grey.

Park Football - Grant Orchard

Park football is a short film animation created by Grant Orchard. Is a funny looking video and really nice to look at. The use of the colour is really simple. They are using a limited colour pallette with mostly pure colours. Bright green, white, black, blue, purple etc. This animation is so simple that makes it really interesting to look at.

The old lady and the Pigeons - Sylvain Chomet

The old lady and the pigeon is an animation created by Sylvain Chomet in 1998. When you see the beginning of this animation it makes you think that is going to be a funny one but if you take a look at all the colours that are used you are going to realise that is not. You can't see any pure colours most of them are shaded (some black is added to all the colours). Using that type of colour palette sets the mood of a sad story.
There is only one scene using warm colours like yellow, red and orange in the beginning of the animation (06:00 min) when the old man is watching a dream. In that dream he sees the old lady giving him some food and that is a very happy moment for him that is why i think they used this type of colours.

Vincent - Tim.Burton Short Animation

Vincent is a stop motion short film of Tim Burton written in 1982. This short animation is really interesting to look at. It's black and white and it doesn't have a lot of lighting in all of the scenes. but when it has is really dramatic with dark rooms and bright lights. With this dramatic contrast it shows you and makes you think that it's about a dark story. Also using this lighting contrast sets up the mood for what will come next and gives you the chills.
